Salfords, United Kingdom, January 31, 2014 - His Royal Highness, Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent, visited the European headquarters of Cubic Transportation Systems as part of a tour of leading Surrey employers in the science, engineering and technology fields.

His Royal Highness was received by Dame Sarah Goad, Lord Lieutenant of Surrey; also in attendance were Councillor Dr. Lynne Hack, Mayor of Reigate and Banstead, and Mr. Crispin Blunt, Member of Parliament for Reigate. The party was given an overview of Cubic’s business, which includes the provision of all ticketing and revenue management for Transport for London as well as for transport operators and authorities in many major cities around the world.

Led by Roger Crow, senior vice president and managing director, European operations at Cubic Transportation Systems, His Royal Highness toured the facility, visiting the system test area and the service centre, experiencing a “Day in the Life of Oyster” along the way.

London’s Oyster card, which has been in operation for over a decade, accounts for millions of passenger journeys in London on a daily basis.  Already running alongside Oyster on London buses and soon to be rolled out across the rest of the Transport for London network, contactless bankcards will increase further the options and flexibility for passengers.

Following a demonstration of the infrastructure underpinning both systems and introductions to key personnel involved in service delivery in London, the party had the opportunity to experience Cubic’s latest innovation, the groundbreaking NextAgent video ticket office.

The visit concluded with presentations by His Royal Highness of achievement and long service awards to members of the Cubic team.

“We have many special days at Cubic and today’s visit by His Royal Highness ranks number one,” commented Roger Crow. ”I am very proud to lead this organisation and the excellent work we do in our industry.  Today we have given our guests an insight into the capabilities that help keep London on the move every day. Of course the technology is important; however, as I have said many times it’s our staff that makes the difference and I am delighted that His Royal Highness is able to join us in recognising this by presenting these awards.”

Before unveiling a plaque marking his visit, His Royal Highness spoke to the assembled staff, saying “I have very much enjoyed meeting so many of you today and I have had a fascinating insight into the work you all do in keeping such a complex system working so well.  You should all feel very proud of what you have achieved.
