Multi-Purpose Smart Card Reader Transformed London Bus Travel
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – April 24, 2014 – Cubic Transportation Systems has been named the winner in the BritWeek UKTI Business Innovation Awards in the product design category. The transportation payment and information technology integrator and services company was recognized at a gala awards ceremony in Beverly Hills last night for the multi-purpose smart card reader that has changed how people pay to ride London’s public buses.
“This award is a great honor and acknowledgement of the hard work produced jointly between our San Diego and UK teams. It is also an acknowledgement of our close partnership with Mayor Boris Johnson and Sir Peter Hendy and the participation of his team at Transport for London (TfL) who do an incredible job enabling Londoners to travel seamlessly throughout the region,” said Steve Shewmaker, president, Cubic Transportation Systems. “All of our customers worldwide are facing the growing urbanization of the population which is putting tremendous pressure on infrastructure and resources. Our job is to help keep people moving in these urban environments. TfL had the vision to use the Cubic-developed reader to give bus riders the option of using their Oyster card or the debit or credit card already in their wallets to pay their fares.”
Oyster is the iconic smart ticketing and revenue management system designed and delivered by Cubic more than a decade ago.
Through its project with TfL, Cubic implemented the new reader in December 2012 and the program has been very successful, with more than 40,000 people every day now making contactless payments to travel on buses in London.
BritWeek UKTI celebrates outstanding achievements in innovation among the diverse UK-California business community. Awards are made in recognition of innovations in product design, technology, social impact and business service by companies operating in both California and the UK.
Headquartered in San Diego, Cubic also has maintained operations outside London for more than two decades in support of its customer TfL.
Judges for the 2014 BritWeek UKTI Business Innovation Awards included creativity expert Sir Ken Robinson, Jaguar design director Ian Callum, Walt Disney International chairman Andy Bird, and Los Angeles television anchor and producer Carlos Amezcua.
