VIENNA, AUSTRIA - October 29, 2012 – Cubic Transportation Systems has emerged victorious in the ITS World Congress 2012 video competition.

Cubic’s four-minute video illustrates Nextcity, Cubic’s vision for a fully-integrated payments, information and decision management system for deployment across urban transport networks. The potential of Nextcity to revolutionize the way we travel in cities is demonstrated through the stories of three regular commuters, whose travel choices are guided by a single integrated transport account which helps make their everyday journeys faster, more comfortable and more cost-effective.

The competition results were announced today at the closing ceremony of the ITS World Congress in Vienna, where the global ITS community had come together to discuss the latest trends and policies in Intelligent Transport Systems.  Cubic, a business unit of Cubic Corporation (NYSE:CUB) and a leading integrator of payment and information technology and services for intelligent travel solutions, faced stiff competition from a field of over 50, which included many of the biggest names in the industry.  The video competition was organized and run by ERTICO, the network of Intelligent Transport Systems and Services stakeholders in Europe.

Announcing the results, Hermann Meyer, chief executive officer of ERTICO and the organizer of the ITS World Congress said,  “The 2012 ITS video competition was launched in order to highlight the importance of awareness raising to encourage the timely deployment of ITS. I am delighted at the response from the ITS community this year, and I heartily congratulate Cubic Transportation Systems, a new ERTICO partner, for winning the ITS video competition with their excellent ‘Nextcity’ video.  Telling a real story in an engaging way helps people to relate to the new possibilities of ITS, which are available now.”

Steve Shewmaker, president of Cubic Transportation Systems, was in Vienna for the announcement. He says, “The entire team is absolutely thrilled to be recognized in such a prestigious forum as the ITS World Congress. Cubic has excellent credentials in the market, having been responsible for many of the most significant advances in the sector over the past four decades. Nextcity represents the next potential step change, delivering many and varied benefits to transport operators and travelers alike.

“There’s widespread interest in the market in what integrated systems can deliver and a number of suppliers have their own interpretation of how urban networks might look in the future,” continues Shewmaker. “What sets Cubic apart, however, is its depth and longevity of experience. We’re uniquely placed to speak authoritatively on the subject and are delighted that this has been so clearly recognized via the public vote.”

Shewmaker says that the video has been the starting point for conversations with transport operators around the globe who recognize that information is fundamental in helping them meet their commitments to transport greater numbers of passengers, cost-effectively, safely and comfortably. “The beauty of Nextcity is that it is modular and can be deployed incrementally, with legacy technology as its foundation. Nextcity is visionary but it’s also attainable, which is what makes it such an attractive prospect.”
