Loyalty-based rider incentive platform for public transit agencies has the potential to increase ridership for transit agencies

SAN DIEGOCubic Corporation (NYSE:CUB) today announced its Cubic Transportation Systems (CTS) business division and partner Miami-Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW) of was recognized with the “Most Innovative Campaign” from the US Search Awards for the successful launch of its new mobile advertising and loyalty rewards platform campaign, Cubic Interactive. The US Search Awards is an annual celebration of the nation’s most innovative content marketing.

Cubic Interactive was first launched in partnership with DTPW in 2020. It was designed as a high-impact, low-cost solution for transit agencies like DTPW to boost ridership and reduce urban congestion. Miami-Dade County, one of the country’s most congested urban areas, became the first municipality to roll out Cubic Interactive via the Go Miami-Dade Transit app.

"This award is an important recognition of Miami-Dade's commitment to innovating in order to better connect our community and promote public transit,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “The innovative loyalty-based platform developed by our partner Cubic provides the building blocks that will help increase transit ridership to reduce congestion, expand mobility, and move this community into a more connected future."

Last year, Cubic and DTPW’s Superbowl and Beyond Campaign kicked off by leveraging rider activity around the year’s biggest sporting event. By mid-year, the campaign showed significant success metrics as an innovative cost-effective solution for transit agencies and advertisers.

“Our inaugural campaign in Miami shows the potential for an intuitive mobile rider rewards program to support public transit at a time when agencies everywhere are looking to develop technology solutions that streamline urban travel,” said Jeffrey Lowinger, president of Cubic Transportation Systems. “This is a win-win for cities – transit authorities can address revenue needs at a low-cost, all while working to alleviate congestion. We look forward to a broader rollout in the new year.”

In the near-term, Cubic Interactive plans to enable riders to earn ‘Stars’ for using transit, employing congestion-reducing travel behaviors such as traveling at off-peak times, or engaging with content from platform advertising partners. Riders can convert their stars to earn free trips on public transit. The platform simultaneously benefits transit agencies by attracting riders through an easy-to-use incentive program and generating revenue through advertising partnerships.

During the initial campaign period from January 2, 2020 to June 6, 2020, more than eight percent of Miami riders signed up to use the platform, earning nearly 3,500,000 stars, equivalent to $17,000 in value and $9,000 of which was redeemed as free transit fare. User engagement with ads was strong with a 15.4 percent video view rate and 10.9 percent of riders visiting the advertised business website after seeing the ads.

“We are working with Cubic to incentivize public transit riders by enhancing the experience of Miami-Dade Transit users,” said DTPW director Alice N. Bravo, P.E.  “By doing this, we are also encouraging new riders to give transit a try. It's certainly rewarding to know that the work we are accomplishing together is being nationally recognized.”
