Cubic Transportation Systems integrating features for bus fare collection system to be compatible with advancements coming to regional TAP system
SAN DIEGO – Jan. 10, 2019 – Cubic Corporation (NYSE: CUB) today announced that its Cubic Transportation Systems (CTS) business division has been awarded a $4.5 million contract from Foothill Transit to upgrade its bus fare collection system. The program will add features and technology enhancements compatible with upgrades being made by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) for the TAP regional smart card system.
“This is an exciting time to work with LA Metro and their participating agencies to bring the system up to speed with current and future fare collection technologies,” said Matt Newsome, vice president and general manager, Western Region, CTS.
“Advancing technology directly benefits our customers and our communities,” said Doran Barnes, executive director of Foothill Transit. “Enhancing the customer experience on board is a key priority and these upgrades are an important step to achieving that.”
Currently, Foothill Transit fareboxes accept cash and the contactless LA Metro TAP cards. With the upgrade, the agency will receive enhancements to driver terminals and real-time wireless communications. Advanced smart card reader hardware and software will enable the latest in smart card and mobile payment technology, including the future TAP mobile app. Users of the TAP mobile app will be able to buy Foothill Transit fare products, plan trips and make mobile payments as they board.
Foothill Transit is one of 27 independent transit service providers in the County of Los Angeles that are members of the TAP network. It is the first to take advantage of recent network investments and infrastructure subsidies being offered by Metro to enable members to take advantage of new TAP features.
The remaining network participants are expected to join in the upgrades over the coming months.
