Cubic’s Intific to discuss Department of Defense-funded software tools that support mental health and STEM education
SAN DIEGO – July 19, 2016 – Cubic Corporation (NYSE: CUB) today announced that Tom F. Nugent III, director of neurotechnology, new media and training solutions at the company’s subsidiary Intific, will speak on a panel titled, “Comics for Impact: Changing Lives with Comics,” at the upcoming Comic-Con International: San Diego 2016 being held at the San Diego Convention Center from July 21 – 24. Comic-Con International is the world’s largest comics and popular arts convention.
At the event, Nugent will discuss two products, Looking GlassTM and ReflɘctTM, which are comic-creating tools that address serious and real-world issues of mental health and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education. Looking Glass is a game developed with Department of Defense and Department of Education funds to address gender discrepancy in engineering by promoting an increased interest in computer programming and robotics for middle school-aged girls. Reflɘct, also developed with Department of Defense funding, is a first-of-its-kind tablet and PC-based graphic novel authoring tool, allowing users to create their own story with different characters and environments in minutes. Although Reflɘct was initially developed as an art therapy tool to help individuals diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), there are future plans to include iterations for school programs, pamphlet or instruction making, movie storyboarding and commercial entertainment.
“Cubic is more than just a company working in the defense and transportation industries. We use cutting-edge technologies to make applications and tools with a broad social and educational impact,” said Tom Nugent III, director of neurotehnology, new media and training solutions, Intific. “We want to leverage our technologies, like Reflɘct, to not only give back to our service members to help them with mental health, but also encourage advancement in STEM learning with educational, engaging and fun activities.”
Intific, a part of the Cubic Global Defense business unit, is on a mission to develop the latest innovations in the world of software. Their unique group of technologists possess a broad range of expertise, including computer science simulation, animation, human-machine interaction, robotics, neuroscience, artificial intelligence, visualization, gaming and networking.
