Cubic’s Intific to share industry’s first tablet and PC-based graphic novel authoring tool to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

SAN DIEGO – July 9, 2015 – Cubic Corporation (NYSE: CUB) today announced that Tom F. Nugent III, program director of the Neuroscience and Education divisions at the company’s subsidiary Intific, will speak on a panel titled, “Comics for Impact: Healing Wounds of War,” at the upcoming Comic-Con International: San Diego 2015 being held at the San Diego Convention Center from July 9 to July 12. Comic-Con International is the largest event for multi-genre entertainment and comics held annually in San Diego since 1970.

Through a contract with the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command – Redstone, Intific developed ‘Reflɘct,’ a first-of-its-kind tablet and PC-based graphic novel authoring tool, allowing users to create their own story with different characters and environments in minutes. Although Reflɘct was initially developed as an art therapy tool to help individuals diagnosed with PTSD, there are future plans to include iterations for school programs, pamphlet or instruction making, movie storyboarding and commercial entertainment.

“In addition to Cubic’s defense and transportation products and services, the company is exploring other opportunities funded in the educational and neuroscience domain for mental health, learning and cognitive benefits,” said Tom Nugent III, program director of Intific’s Neuroscience and Education divisions. “We not only offer military training services and solutions, but we also realize the importance of the mental health of our service members and veterans and are excited to contribute in this area. Reflɘct removes the skill barrier of artistic talent by providing an intuitive easy to use interface, allowing anyone to tell their story quickly and easily, while having fun at the same time.”

Intific, a part of the Cubic Global Defense business unit, is on a constant mission to develop the latest innovations in the world of software. Their unique group of technologists possess a broad range of expertise, including computer science simulation, animation, human-machine interaction, robotics, neuroscience, artificial intelligence, visualization, gaming and networking.

Tom Nugent will be speaking at the following panel during the event:

  • Comics for Impact: Healing Wounds of War
    Saturday, July 11, 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. in Room 8 at the San Diego Convention Center
How can comic creation tools be used for art therapy for wounded warriors? How can they be repurposed for education?
Panelists Dan Thomsen (SIFT), Tom Nugent (neuroscience and education, Intific) and Alan Gershenfeld (president, E-Line Media) will explore these questions and discuss how collaboration between comic creators, psychologists and technologists is producing new tools for addressing mental health issues and education. Moderated by Russell Shilling (U.S. Department of Education, former DARPA pm).
